Tiger Woods (pictured above) entertained large crowds in posting a 65 on Saturday to record his lowest score of the year and his lowest-ever at The Players Championship, but it wasn’t enough to distract Webb Simpson from extending his lead to seven shots with just one round to go.
There was plenty of movement on moving day, most notably from Woods and Jordan Spieth who also lit up the third round with his own 65, but as far as Simpson was concerned he was only intent on creating a bigger gap between the field and himself come day end.
A 68 lengthened his lead from five shots to seven and despite the Stadium Course’s propensity to make circumstances change very quickly, it is very difficult to see how the 2012 US Open champion could blow such a huge advantage, the largest after 54 holes in the tournament’s 44-year history.
Fellow American Danny Lee (pictured above) is his nearest challenger on 12-under following a 70, but Woods will believe he has a shout of a top three finish, despite being 11 behind and close to missing the cut just 24 hours earlier.
