The first ever US Open Cup game in Polk County took place Tuesday night as Lakeland Tropics took on The Villages SC at Lake Mrytle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
The game was a close matched affair and ended 1-1 in normal time. The goals came in the first half and it was The Villages SC who scored first when Danilo Suarez Seglio (pictured above) scored in the 16th minute. Tropics keeper Joel Serrano stopped Seglio’s first effort but was powerless to stop the rebound falling directly to Seglio and he instinctively pounced to fire high into the right hand side.
The Tropics fought back and Raheem Taylor-Parkes had the ball in the net six minutes later but the goal was chalked off for offside. Taylor-Parkes wasn’t to be denied though and he equalized in the 37th minute after good work on the right hand side by Kazuki Kimura.
No further goals in 90 minutes or 30 minutes of extra time could decide the tie so it went to penalty kicks. After 10 rounds of penalties, The Villages eventually scored the decisive kick and won 8-7. It was the fourth straight year The Villages SC has qualified for the Cup, and the second year for Lakeland. The Villages now travel to take on Tampa Bay Rowdies next Tuesday, 14th in St. Petersburg.
