Looking for more evidence of the popularity of soccer in Orlando? Then look no further than the 45,000 tickets that have been sold so far for the game between the Mexican national team and Costa Rica this coming Saturday night.
Mexico arrived in Orlando last night and immediately got down to training this morning at the ESPN Wide World of Sports at Walt Disney World.
Costa Rica are due to arrive in Central Florida on Thursday and they will host a training session on Friday over at UCF.
The game will feature two of the top CONCACAF teams ahead of this summer’s Gold Cup tournament in the U.S. Both Mexico and Costa Rica are expected to have their top squads available for selection in this friendly.
Costa Rica advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals last summer in Brazil, while Mexico is a traditional power in the region.
In addition to the training sessions and the match, there will be a public event at the Allstate Store in Plaza del Sol in Kissimmee on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., as well as an appearance by former Mexico star Jared Borgetti at Home Depot in St. Cloud. Former Mexico goalkeeper Jorge Campos will appear at a Coca-Cola event at Sedanos on North John Young Parkway in Kissimmee from 3-7 p.m. on Friday.
There will also be a pregame fan festival at the Citrus Bowl from 1:30-5:30 p.m. that will feature appearances by several former Mexico players, inlcuding Borgetti, Adolfo Ríos, Pável Pardo, Zague and Luis Hernández.
It promises to be an exciting match and proves once again that the “City Beautiful” has been taken over by the “Beautiful Game.”
The game will be played on June 27 at the Orlando Citrus Bowl. The game is set to kick off for 6 p.m. Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster.com
