The first ever meeting between Florida Tropics and Orlando SeaWolves ended with a 9-6 victory for the home side in Lakeland on Saturday night.

The game was Orlando SeaWolves first Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) away game and the first of six regular season scheduled match ups between the two local rivals in the South Central Division.

The Tropics started the better of the two teams but it took a while for the deadlock to be broken as both teams spurned chances before Victor Parreiras exploited a 3 v 1 situation to shoot low to the left to beat SeaWolves keeper Rainer Hauss for the opening goal with just over five minutes of the opening period left to play.

The second quarter saw the floodgates open as the Tropics took their opportunities. 30 seconds into the period poor defending by the SeaWolves defence saw an unmarked Anthony Arico slot home to make it 2-0 and then two goals by Freddy Moojen and one from Guilherme gave the home side a 5-0 advantage at half time.

The scoreline flattered the Tropics as the SeaWolves went close on numerous occasions out shooting their rivals 19-15 but 23 seconds into the second half they got some reward as Gordy Gurson pounced for his fourth goal of the season and to get one back.

Three minutes later the Tropics restored their five goal advantage as Parreiras fired home a lovely strike from the right hand side that went in off the far post to make it 6-1 and worse was to come for the visitors as sloppy defending by the SeaWolves allowed Arico to make it 7-1 seconds later. Ricardo Diegues, playing in his first game of the year, then made it 8-1 with a fine finish on the breakaway with 5 minutes left in the third quarter.

The SeaWolves never gave up though and a long ball from the Orlando half saw Osvaldo Rojas apply a smart finish past Tropics keeper Hugo Silva to make it 8-2 before Joshio Sandoval curled home a free kick to the right hand top corner to make it 8-3 at the end of the quarter.

The comeback continued in the fourth, as Rojas netted his second to make it 8-4 midway through the quarter, then Tyler Turner scored his first goal as a SeaWolf to make it 8-5 with 1 min 43 seconds to go.

The score became 8-6 with 28 seconds to go as Osvaldo Rojas completed his hat trick tapping in a loose ball and with the last kick of the game, Parreiras also completed his treble to give the Tropics a deserved 9-6 victory.

Florida Tropics take to the road next weekend when they visit St. Louis on Saturday night before taking on Kansas City on Sunday afternoon. The next game for the SeaWolves will be a return game in Lakeland to take on the Tropics on 12th January. Kickoff for that game will be at 7:05 p.m EST.
