Disney announced today that it will close DisneyQuest at Downtown Disney in 2016.
DisneyQuest, the indoor interactive theme park and arcade that once promised to be at the forefront of game experience, is closing its doors for good sometime in 2016 to make way for the NBA Experience attraction and restaurant.
The popular five-story building was home to interactive and virtual-reality video games and attractions, along with hands-on entertainment experiences but it seems to have fallen victim to changing technological times. In an era of smartphone apps, lifelike video games and other interactive attractions, DisneyQuest started to appear dated to many people and essentially failed to keep up with the investment needed to keep people coming back.
DisneyQuest’s attractions include CyberSpace Mountain, a design-your-own-roller-coaster motion-simulator ride, and Mighty Ducks Pinball Slam, a life-size game in which players stand on a joystick that controls cartoon characters on a screen. DisneyQuest also has more-traditional video games too and until it closes, visits to DisneyQuest will still be included in Walt Disney World’s premiere theme-park passes.
The NBA Experience at Disney Springs promises to bring new high-tech experiences, a restaurant and a store but there is no word on what exactly that entails at this point in time.
